As one of our most popular national sports, netball has long held a place in the heart of many New Zealanders. However, the traditional game is demanding and can seem a bit too daunting for people looking to keep fit in later life, or those returning to exercise after a break due to pregnancy or injury.
This is where Walking Netball comes in. The modified game includes no running or jumping and several other adaptations to the standard netball rules to make it more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
Earlier this year, Auckland Netball Centre - the oldest and largest netball centre in New Zealand - launched a Walking Netball programme in collaboration with a local retirement village. Weekly sessions take place on a Monday at 10am during term time and the growing community of players is as diverse as they are friendly. The centre aims to encourage people of all ages to get back in to playing netball in a fun, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
The programme has also helped to foster community connection across generations and to alleviate the loneliness which is often prevalent in the retired community. The group always stays for a cup of tea and a chat following the session, and many new friendships have been made since the programme began.
Auckland Netball are now offering two free evening taster sessions in the first week of the October school holidays, so anyone can go along and give Walking Netball a try.
Wednesday 2nd October, 6.30pm - 7.30pm at Windmill Park, Mount Eden
Thursday 3rd October, 6.30pm - 7.30pm at Auckland Netball Centre, St Johns
The sessions are open to anyone and you can find more information on the Auckland Netball website.
Auckland Netball have also announced they will run a Walking Netball grade as part of their existing Term 4 Summer League, increasing opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get out on court this Summer.
If you are looking for a way to get back into exercise after a break, Walking Netball could be the answer.
